As one of four teams, Rodeo was selected to make a proposal for a memorial site at Utøya, in remembrance of the 69 lives that were lost there on July 22., 2011.

The memorial site is situated in a small clearing in the forest, on the north side of the island. Presented with this task, it was important for us not to make a space that would call for a specific ritual or in any way dictate how people should behave at the site, but rather to make room for individual encounters with the memorial site: Creating a space that would allow for a wide range of meetings and rituals. Our concept displays 69 pillars of glass, standing side by side inside an oval shape, filled with sand. The glass lets visitors see the light refraction during different times of the day and over the year, but also invites the visitor to look through the glass pillars and into the horizon. The row of glass pillars is slightly curved, creating an open space in front, where visitors are invited to leave markings, messages or flowers in the sand. The oval shape fits perfectly between the seven tall pine trees that surround the clearing, and the edge of the oval creates a bench, where visitors can sit and enjoy the view and the tranquility of the space.
