The feasibility study is conducted on behalf of Statsbygg, Universitetet i Tromsø, Harstad kommune and Samskipnaden (Student association) and in collaboration with specialists in work space strategy and campus development from tegn_3.

The task was to propose a new strategic masterplan for the UiT Campus Harstad after the former high school merged with the University of Tromsø, and as part of this consider possibilities for student housing, a new student's community arena and expansion of the University's premises, both in short and long term.

The given site is located at Harstad Harbour next to the historic city centre. Our approach was that campus development in this area equals city development in a direct continuation of the existing city centre, and thus the campus had to have the core characteristics of the city: open, public and mixed use.

 

Main urban strategies

1. Repair city fabric, fill in the gaps and strengthen Havnegata and Tordenskioldsgate as city streets.

2. Add qualities and programs to the Harbour promenade and create a new cross connection between the main harbour and Harstadhamna.

3. Strengthen the campus as destination by facilitating for city life and include the area as part of the recreational city of Harstad.

4. Create a new main entrance to the University: a point of welcoming, orientation and a public space.

A2 Tordenskiold studentby - Student's housing.

B1 UiT - Internal transformation and extension of main university building.

M1 Kollonnaden - Flexible temporary event space and parking.

M2 Campusparken - Upgrade of representative main outdoor space.

T1 Ulla - Transformation of former wool storage building to maker space and indoor social arena.

T2 Aggregatet - Transformation of former aggregate building to café and public square.

C1 Mid to long term expansion area for campus related functions. 

C2-3 Long term expansion area for University/commercial functions.
